Firms Form LED Lighting Group

    Pelican Products Inc., Torrance, Calif., joined with Blue i UK Ltd., a European company that develops lighting for remote areas, to form Peli Advanced Area Lighting Group, a new division focused on energy-efficient LEDs.

    “The lighting industry hasn’t even scratched the surface in effectively using LEDs in commercial applications for lighting large areas,” says President and CEO of Pelican, Lyndon Faulkner.

    Pelican and Blue i are already manufacturing a battery-powered portable lighting system that can light an area for 15 continuous hours. It uses LEDs with 50,000-hr life spans. They hope to bring the advantages of LEDs to households and businesses. For example, LEDs burn 50 times longer than incandescents and eight times longer than the new CFLs. LEDs also do not contain toxic materials and are completely recyclable, unlike CFLs.
