Environmentally friendly air conditioning

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) is working with industry firms and the EPA to improve R134a refrigerant systems for vehicles.

Called the "Improved R134a Project" (IRCRP), the goal will be develop technologies to reduce atmospheric leakage by 50% and improve system efficiency by 30%. Two teams, one to address emissions and one to address efficiency, will include experts from Tier-1 and 2 automotive suppliers, OEMs, Mobile Air Conditioning Society (MACS) members, and refrigerant, hose coupling, and fitting suppliers. The IRCRP will begin later this year and continue through 2006.
