Depending on the application, designing a linear motion system can require a significant investment in electronics and programming. However, for basic reciprocating linear motion, rolling ring engineering can often reduce or eliminate the need for complex control systems, sensors, gears and so forth. Rolling ring linear motion is definitely not for every application. This paper is designed to provide guidance in evaluating a linear motion application to see if rolling ring linear motion can be used and if it will result in a simpler, easier to use, less costly system.
