A new medical film from Dow Chemical Co., could replace polyvinyl chloride in some medical applications.

A new medical film from Dow Chemical Co., could replace polyvinyl chloride in some medical applications. Some people fear PVC contains plasticizers that leach into medicines and wounds. Called Corvelle HF, the new film has the strength and flexibility of heat-sealed films, but can be processed on RF or HF welding machines. The material also features high tear, puncture, and chemical resistance, as well as softness and flexibility. It can be made into IV bags, waterproof liners for dressings, orthopedic devices, and medical packaging. It's processing yield exceeds that of PVC by 30%. Because it's polyolefin based, the film is easily recycled or cleanly incinerated, and it will not turn brittle from sterilization or age.
