New at Ford: Design reviews in 3D

The Portico WorkWall from Fakespace Systems, Kitchener, Ontario (www.fakespace.com), can display large-scale and stereoscopic models used for collaborative design reviews.

Design and engineering teams from Ford Motor Co. can now compile 3D, immersive representations in real time from multiple data sources and formats for design and assembly reviews, thanks to technology from Silicon Graphics Inc., Mountain View, Calif. (www.sgi.com).

The SGI Reality Center integrates an Onyx 3000 series visualization system with three InfiniteReality3 graphics pipes, eight 64-bit processors, and three high-brightness digital projectors, letting up to 30 people collaborate on the design process. According to the company, teams are now able to conduct appearance reviews more efficiently; perform digital-assembly reviews to assess part fit and function; and reduce the need for costly and time-consuming physical models.
