Carbon-Reinforced Compounds

Pre-elec compounds are reinforced with chopped and milled carbon fiber and carbon nanotubes.
March 17, 2005

The compounds are available with as much as 60% carbon fiber in PPS and nylon 6 and 6/6, and at least 40% in PP, ABS, PC, and POM. Carbon fiber boosts the flexural modulus, tensile strength, and electrical conductivity while lowering shrinkage. Compounds made from the milled carbon fibers are less prone to warpage while those based on carbon nanotubes can be electrically conductive at loadings of only 3%. Standard color is black, but compounds with 10% reinforcement come in a variety of colors.
