Summary
The convergence of healthcare and technology is making it essential to develop expertise in all forms of market-leading technologies—from precision dispensing to cutting-edge material science to AI and cybersecurity. Medical device companies will need to carefully evaluate their businesses and operating models if they are to deliver value beyond the device.
In keeping with this trajectory, our panelists explore some of the trends, technologies and innovations that contribute to the evolution of medical devices.
Panelists answer questions on:
- The economic or therapeutic trends that will impact the medical device industry in the next five years.
- What manufacturers and machine designers are doing to meet the demand for smaller, smarter medical devices.
- How recent innovations in design and materials enhance performance and versatility?
- How the IoMT (Internet of Medical Things) informs the future of medical device manufacturing.
- How cybersecurity impacts the industry, and strategies to mitigate vulnerabilities.
Speakers
Market Development Manager
Ahmed Khan develops recommendations and solutions for customers requiring precision fluid dispensing technologies in the medical device and diagnostics industry and more. As Market Development Manager at Nordson EFD, he has consulted with engineering and manufacturing firms in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Khan is involved in a customer’s initial system integration and custom automation installations. Ahmed holds a bachelor's degree in engineering from the University of London, and an MBA from Aston Business School.
Division Scientist
Audrey A. Sherman is a Division Scientist at MSB (Medical Surgical Business) with more than 35 years of experience at Solventum. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry with a Minor in Art from Augsburg College in Minneapolis, MN. Throughout her career, Sherman has worked extensively in R&D Laboratory Operations, specializing in organic synthesis and addition/condensation polymerizations. Her expertise includes working with acrylate and silicone PSAs, release materials, and crosslinking of polymers, including Microstructured PSAs and novel Long Term Wear Skin Adhesives for Wearable Medical devices.
Sherman's experience ranges from synthesis and characterization to large-scale manufacturing polymerization processes, such as reactive extrusion, adhesive coating, solventless extrusion processing, and release liner technologies. She currently holds about 170 U.S. patents.
Chief Security Strategist
As Chief Security Strategist, Axel Wirth provides strategic vision and industry leadership to MedCrypt and its customers. In this role, he helps guide the company in critical security strategy decisions and supports the adoption of leading security technologies by the healthcare industry. He is an advocate for compliance, privacy and security—and ultimately patient safety—in healthcare. Wirth draws from more than 30 years of international experience in the industry.
He joins the panel on the recommendation of the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation, where he is both an AAMI Fellow and AAMI Faculty (he teaches a Cybersecurity 101 Course).
Editor-in-Chief
As Machine Design’s content lead, Rehana Begg is tasked with elevating the voice of the design and multi-disciplinary engineer in the face of digital transformation and engineering innovation. Begg has more than 25 years of editorial experience and has spent the past decade in the trenches of industrial manufacturing, focusing on new technologies, manufacturing innovation and business. Her B2B career has taken her from corporate boardrooms to plant floors and underground mining stopes, covering everything from automation & IIoT, robotics and mechanical design to plant operations, maintenance, reliability and continuous improvement.
Begg holds an MBA, a Master of Journalism degree, and a BA (Hons.) in Political Science. She is committed to lifelong learning and feeds her passion for innovation in publishing, transparent science and clear communication by attending relevant conferences and seminars/workshops.
