Clean air for military computers

The world's first MIL-Spec Air Filters now grace VME-style computers built for military and other applications characterized by harsh conditions.

One of the critical design considerations for the Model 6000 VME-18 Chassis was cooling. Chassis maker DataMetrics used a front-toback forced-air thermal-management system incorporating a special air filter, visible on the front panel. The filter by Universal Air Filter Co. is billed as the first designed specifically to meet Mil Specs.

The world's first MIL-Spec Air Filters now grace VME-style computers built for military and other applications characterized by harsh conditions.

The filters were developed by Universal Air Filter Co., Sauget, Ill. (www.uaf.com), for use with the Model 6000 VME-18 Chassis made by DataMetrics Corp., Orlando, Fla. (www.datametricscorp.com). Key to handling the stringent needs of military use is Quadrafoam filter media, an open-cell polyurethane foam treated with a thin layer of next-generation flame-retardant coating. The resulting filter is flexible and resilient and works particularly well in severe environments, the company says. The coated foam contains an antimicrobial additive with a fungus growth rating of zero and is pH neutralized to lengthen filter life. It comes in various pore sizes to permit trade-offs of dust-capturing capability and low resistance to airflow.

The filters meet standards and classifications that include MIS 20189E; UL 94 HF-1; UL 900 Class 2, CE; Telcordia NEBS GR-78-CORE and GR-63-CORE; and FMVSS 302.
