Engineers at Rockwell Automation say their online system has delivered more than 2 million configured part and assembly files. "PARTsolutions delivers native data in over 85 CAD and graphics formats," says W. Clyde Fowler, director of IT power systems at Rockwell. "We've had over 1,200 companies download parts in the first few months we've been online."
The company's previous success in developing computer systems led it to consider keeping the project in-house. "But it would have been difficult requiring lots of resources for hosting infrastructure, creating a Web site, data reporting, and building CAD models. Plus, we would have delivered only one or two native formats," says Dennis Thompson, Rockwell manager of computer integrated manufacturing.
"Every download is a lead sent to our sales operation for follow up," adds Fowler. "One early lead came from a huge conveyor manufacturer in Detroit with whom we weren't familiar because they buy through a distributor.
What's more, we're getting firsthand access to many engineering companies that do design work for our ultimate customers."
