Label Printer Goes RFID

Dec. 9, 2004
The 5200 is an RFID smart-label printer applicator that rejects and retains nonverifiable tags.

It can print, encode, verify, and apply pressure-sensitive radiofrequency identification smart labels to cartons and pallet loads in one operation. If the system determines a tag is unverifiable, it rejects the smart label prior to applying. It can use a variety of print-encode engines that work with thermal-transfer technology to produce smart labels with text, bar codes, and graphics at 203 dpi. As labels are printed, digital information is encoded on thin, ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) transponders that are embedded in the smart labels. Encoded information is verified by the system, which then applies labels to the tops or sides of cartons or pallet loads. If a label cannot be verified, it is rejected and retained before it can be applied. Labels up to 5 6 in. can be dispensed at up to 12 ips and are applied using the tamp-blow method. For companies that already use existing Model 5200 systems, a retrofit kit is available to upgrade them into RFIDcapable systems.
