Position Sensors for Rugged Environments

The LV-45 Series of position sensors from the Alliance Sensors Group, a division of H.G. Schaevitz LLC, Moorestown, N.J., use linear-variable inductive transducers, so there’s no contact between the sensing element and its moving parts. A heavy wall aluminum or stainless-steel housing protects the sensor and its internal electronics from potentially destructive working environments. The sensors are also shorter and more rugged than other linear sensors. This lets them survive millions of cycles of operation in tough applications, such as measuring the position of steam turbine valves no matter where they are mounted, or determining the expansion and contraction of bridge joints.

The position sensors have seven measuring ranges, and can handle distances ranging from 4 to 18 inches (100 to 450 mm) with resolutions of 0.25% of full scale. Typical linearity error is ±0.15% of full-scale output. The sensors operate in temperatures ranging from –40° to 105°C, and withstand vibrations and 1,000-g shock loads.

They come with a variety of analog I/Os, cables, and connector terminations and rod-eye end mounts. A proprietary feature called SenSet lets installers trim the zero and full-scale outputs after the sensor is in place to meet the application’s actual range of motion.
