3-Phase Solid State Relays and Their Application in 3-Phase Motor Circuits

The proper selection of 3-phase solid state relays for motor control application depends not only upon a comprehensive understanding of 3-phase SSRs, but also of the 3-phase power system and typical loads as well.

Solid state relays are used in a wide variety of electrical load-switching applications, including professional cooking equipment, plastics machinery, packaging machinery, lighting systems, medical equipment, laboratory ovens, beverage dispensing machines, HVAC/R systems, and many other industrial and commercial applications. For the purpose of understanding these applications relative to the use of SSRs for their control, most loads can be grouped into two main categories: heating and motion control.

This paper includes a summary of 3-phase power systems, the characteristics of common 3-phase motor loads, and a comprehensive discussion of 3-phase solid state relays and their application to such loads.
