Hexagon Expands Software Capabilities with Acquisition of 3D Systems’ Geomagic Suite

Dec. 24, 2024
The $123 million acquisition will strengthen Hexagon’s capabilities in 3D modeling, metrology and inspection software capabilities within the manufacturing sector.

In a move to expand its software portfolio, Hexagon acquired 3D Systems’ Geomagic suite of interoperable software packages, known for being able to create high-quality 3D models from diverse sources and leveraging advanced laser scanning technology.

The Geomagic suite includes Design X, Control X, Freeform and Wrap—tools that are engineered to automate the processing of 3D scanned data, enabling the creation of digital models from physical objects. In addition to model creation, the software extends to generating history-based parametric CAD models that are necessary for modern product manufacturing.

The tools facilitate initial freeform design, allow modifications to existing CAD models, and provide highly accurate measurement and inspection functionalities for quality control. Hexagon’s acquisition of the Geomagic capabilities aims to expand its existing offerings within the Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence division.

“The combination of Geomagic and our existing solutions will further strengthen our market leadership in 3D metrology and reengineering…We look forward to welcoming the Geomagic team to Hexagon,” said Norbert Hanke, interim president and CEO of Hexagon.

The financial terms of the acquisition include a purchase price of $123 million for the Geomagic software business, structured on a cash and debt-free basis. The acquired business reported approximately 100 employees, generated around $30 million in revenue in 2023 and offered operating margins that positively impacted the Manufacturing Intelligence division’s overall financial performance

The completion of this transaction is pending regulatory approvals and other customary conditions, which are anticipated to be finalized by early in the Q2 2025.
