What Industries can Benefit from Machine Vision?

Aug. 12, 2024
In an upcoming webinar, Cognex’s Eric Hershberger and Machine Vision Source’s David L. Dechow provide high-level insights into recent machine vision tools and trends.

Whet your appetite with a sneak peek of this Thursday’s (Aug. 15)  machine vision webinar with David L. Dechow, owner/consultant at Machine Vision Source, and Eric Hershberger, principal application engineer at Cognex, and moderated by Rehana Begg, editor-in-chief at Machine Design

These two veteran engineers share insights on applications of artificial intelligence (AI) and engineering, including battery manufacturing and complex imaging technologies. Hershberger highlights the challenges in battery inspection, noting the need for 100% surface inspection due to the importance of quality and battery manufacturing. He talks about advancements in AI, particularly in optical character recognition (OCR), which has significantly reduced project time and increased efficiency. Other areas of focus include surface inspection in automotive manufacturing, where variations and defects like scratches are meticulously analyzed.

Dechow adds to the conversation by discussing the excitement around 3D imaging and robot guidance technology, highlighting innovations in food and beverage processing—such as cap inspections and thermal imaging for checking seal integrity under caps. Dechow also talks about the use of shortwave infrared imaging to inspect fill levels and opaque containers and the potential of AI and classifying and grading food products effectively, especially in challenging situations due to the natural variations in food.
