High-Speed Camera and Barcode Reading Technology Showcased by Cognex Corp.

Aug. 12, 2024
Cognex Corp.’s vision system has high-speed inspection capabilities and edge learning benefits, as was demonstrated at the Automate Show this past May. The company also demonstrated the versatility of its new torch light and presented a favorite demo using its barcode reader and camera to etch and read data.

Eric Hershberger, principal application engineer at Cognex Corp., showed Machine Design the latest advancements in high-speed camera technology, particularly its In-Sight 3800 Vision System, which enables rapid inspection of vials for correct cap placement and label application. He highlighted the benefits of edge learning, a subset of deep learning, in improving the accuracy of high-speed inspection, and demonstrated the versatility of the new torch light with red, blue, green, white and IR light capabilities.

He then showed us his “favorite demo,” which involves using the company’s DataMan 8700 barcode reader to read badges and uses a PLC to send the data to a laser to etch the attendees’ names on a pen. Once etched, he used a Cognex 2800 camera with built-in edge learning OCR to take a picture where it automatically read the data.
