Sensata’s Leak-Detection Sensor Supports Hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) Refrigerants

Dec. 3, 2024
As industry shifts toward refrigerants that minimize global warming potential, this sensor is designed to meet the need for effective leak detection systems.

Sensata’s Resonix RGD sensor for leak detection is certified for multiple A2L refrigerants. It is reported to be the first of its kind to receive full UL recognition for use with R454A, R454B, R454C and R32 refrigerants under the 4th edition of UL 60335-2-40.

Designed to detect the presence of A2L refrigerant gases, the sensor uses patented technology that monitors the acoustic resonance of the surrounding air, providing real-time detection capabilities that are necessary for managing potential leaks.

The move from hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants, which are known for their high global warming potential, to hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) refrigerants aligns with international efforts to combat climate change, including the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol. This treaty aims for an 85% reduction in HFCs in the United States and other developed countries by 2036, with a global target of 2047.

Key features of the sensor include:

  • Mitigation capabilities—Can trigger safety measures to vent refrigerant gas before it reaches unsafe levels
  • Long lifespan—With a life expectancy of more than 15 years, the sensor often exceeds the lifetime of the equipment it is monitoring
  • No calibration required—Does not require field calibration or re-zeroing, reducing service costs and maintenance for installers and end users
  • Resistant to contaminants—Unaffected by fouling gases, HVAC cleaning solutions and continuous exposure to refrigerants.

The sensor works by being mounted near the evaporator coil so that it can trigger mitigation measures, such as activating a fan to vent gas before it can accumulate and reach hazardous levels. This proactive approach is vital for safety and addresses the stringent requirements that new leak detection systems must incorporate to manage the slightly flammable properties of A2L refrigerants.
