To keep them clean, manufacturers supply plastic caps that fit into the holes. But installing the caps is a time-consuming, multistep process. An alternative developed by Schneeberger Inc., Bedford, Mass. (schneeberger.com), replaces individual caps with the BAC Coverstrip for Ball Monorail. It snaps into the full-length groove on the rail, cutting installation time in half. Since the width of the strip is less than that of the guide rail, an exposed surface on top of the rail can be used as a reference during assembly. The strip keeps coolant, dirt, and debris from getting inside the bored holes. And wipers are protected during installation because the rough edges of the bored holes are below the groove and do not contact the wipers.
