Transforming Prosthetics: The Nexus of Technology and Athletic Performance

May 28, 2024
Converging subtractive manufacturing through CNC machining and the swift prototyping of additive manufacturing with 3D printing is changing the playing field for adaptive athletes.

BioDapt’s founder Mike Schultz and Dan Snetselaar, product sales leader for CNC machining at Protolabs, talk about their collaboration in creating high-performing prosthetics for athletes in this final part of a three-part series.

From the quick trajectory from CAD model to physical prototype, to material selection, to the CNC machining of the parts, Snetselaar covers the heavy lifting that the Protolabs system does for its customers.

“It’s so impressive,” Schultz says. “I mean, what [Protolabs is] capable of, is it just mind blowing,” speaking about being able to load up a part and knowing within an hour if it will redline an area that is not machinable.

“We at Protolabs take a huge amount of pride in even getting a chance to...experience a little bit of the story that Mike's going through and seeing some of these great things that are coming on the back end,” Snetelaar says.
