ASTM Opens 3D Printing Center for Standards-Based R&D

Dec. 1, 2017
Recognizing additive manufacturing’s deepening role in industries from aerospace to healthcare, the ASTM innovation hub and center of excellence will combine talent across industry, academia, and government to create better standards for AM R&D.

ASTM International announces the opening of a new center of excellence dedicated to the field of additive manufacturing (AM). The center will host a global innovation hub with university and industry members to advance technical standards and standards-based R&D, as well as education and training.

The organization is accepting industry-university proposals (learn more here, PDF) up to December 22 for parties that want to become part of its global innovation hub. Letters of intent are due by December 4. The organization will announce winning proposals early in 2018. Winners will be able to use the resources at the center to advance ASTM’s vision for standards-related R&D. Proposals should emphasize applicants' approach to maximizing collaboration between academia, industry, and government.

“Over the last decade, hundreds of the world’s top experts in additive manufacturing have pioneered the development of new standards through ASTM International,” says Katharine Morgan, president of ASTM. “We are thrilled to take this next bold step to bridge standards development with R&D, while also meeting the growing demand for related services in this field.”

The center will be supported with up to $250,000 annually for up to five years. The center also accepts in-kind contributions.
