So Moog Inc. engineered this testbed to more accurately simulate the forces. It has a probe mounted to a cart that rides on a track and an actively controlled suspension system that supports the drogue. Beneath the refueling probe assembly on the cart is a dynamometer that measures forces and moments on the probe's mast during impact. Past beds were based on a simple drop test.</div> <div class="field-image-promo"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_promo" width="595" height="335" alt="" src="http://machinedesign.com/site-files/machinedesign.com/files/AerialRefueling.jpg?1406555690" /> </div> <div class="field-link-target"> <span>Open In New Window:&nbsp;</span> No </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div><p><a href="http://machinedesign.com/aerial-refueling-just-got-better-navys-new-testbed" target="_blank">read more</a></p> Defense Mon, 28 Jul 2014 13:51:00 +0000 39751 at http://machinedesign.com The Missile Technology Behind the Malaysian Jet Tragedy http://machinedesign.com/defense/missile-technology-behind-malaysian-jet-tragedy <div class="field-deck"> While accusations fly about who's responsible, technologists speculate about the technology used to down a Malaysian passenger jet over the Ukraine. </div> <div class="node-body article-body">There are several surface-to-air Soviet missle technologies capable of reaching the Malaysian passenger jet shot down over the Ukraine.</div> <div class="field-content-focus"> <span>Content Classification:&nbsp;</span> Curated </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div><p><a href="http://machinedesign.com/defense/missile-technology-behind-malaysian-jet-tragedy" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://machinedesign.com/defense/missile-technology-behind-malaysian-jet-tragedy#comments Defense Fri, 18 Jul 2014 12:36:00 +0000 39331 at http://machinedesign.com The First Eight X Airplanes: From Mach 1 to Almost 7 http://machinedesign.com/technologies/first-eight-x-airplanes-mach-1-almost-7 <div class="node-body gallery-body">Here’s a look at the first 13 years of X airplanes, going from 1946 through 1959.</div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div><p><a href="http://machinedesign.com/technologies/first-eight-x-airplanes-mach-1-almost-7" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://machinedesign.com/technologies/first-eight-x-airplanes-mach-1-almost-7#comments Technologies Defense Thu, 05 Jun 2014 21:03:00 +0000 38141 at http://machinedesign.com
