It consists of a carbon-nanotube coating that can be sprayed on or applied in flexible sheets. Sending electricity through the panel or coated area generates enough heat to prevent ice from forming and break free any ice that has formed. A controller monitors weather conditions and heater performance, ensuring power is only used when needed.

http://machinedesign.com/defense/nanotubes-keep-drone-wings-ice-free#comments Defense Wed, 25 Feb 2015 22:13:00 +0000 46761 at http://machinedesign.com X-planes: The Next Eight: X-24 through the X-38 http://machinedesign.com/defense/x-planes-next-eight-x-24-through-x-38
X planes from 1959 through 2002 were used to explore technologies that would be later used on the Space Shuttle, on fighter aircraft, and drones.

http://machinedesign.com/defense/x-planes-next-eight-x-24-through-x-38#comments Technologies Defense Gallery Thu, 29 Jan 2015 14:43:00 +0000 45781 at http://machinedesign.com
X (experimental) aircraft and spacecraft were built by aviation companies but were flown and maintained by test pilots from NASA (or its predecessor, NACA), and the military. These planes, the X-24 through the X-38, cover the period from 1959 through 2002. Some were used to explore technologies that would later be used on the Space Shuttle. Others pushed the envelope in terms of control and flight surfaces, knowledge that would be used on fighter aircraft as well as drones.
The Softer Side of Exoskeletons http://machinedesign.com/motion-control/softer-side-exoskeletons
Can a pair of pants help soldiers lift more and walk farther?

http://machinedesign.com/motion-control/softer-side-exoskeletons#comments Defense Motion Control Sensors Fri, 23 Jan 2015 17:27:00 +0000 45701 at http://machinedesign.com “Inventor” of Fake Bomb Detector Headed to Jail, Finally http://machinedesign.com/blog/inventor-fake-bomb-detector-headed-jail-finally
See how far people will go to believe a charlatan.

A Skeptical Engineer

http://machinedesign.com/blog/inventor-fake-bomb-detector-headed-jail-finally#comments ADE-651 fake bomb detector Defense Community A Skeptical Engineer Fri, 21 Nov 2014 19:02:00 +0000 44931 at http://machinedesign.com Electronic “Sniffer” Searches Out Nuclear Devices http://machinedesign.com/defense/electronic-sniffer-searches-out-nuclear-devices
Engineers at Sandia National Laboratory have built a mobile imager of neutrons for emergency responders (MINER).

http://machinedesign.com/defense/electronic-sniffer-searches-out-nuclear-devices#comments Defense News Thu, 20 Nov 2014 15:55:00 +0000 44891 at http://machinedesign.com “Oops, I Dropped the Warhead!” (On Purpose) http://machinedesign.com/defense/oops-i-dropped-warhead-purpose
The Defense Dept. drop tested its latest nuclear warhead, the W88 ALT 370, the follow-up to the W88.

http://machinedesign.com/defense/oops-i-dropped-warhead-purpose#comments Defense Fri, 31 Oct 2014 17:29:00 +0000 44371 at http://machinedesign.com
