A new class of transparent thermoplastic olefins offers weight and manufacturing cost advantages over glass and performance advantages over other thermoplastics. Designed for electro-optic applications, the materials are amorphous copolymers based on cyclic and linear olefins. Transparent olefins offer low-moisture absorption and operate in temperatures to 340°F. The materials have improved transmission rates (up to 92%) compared to those of traditional thermoplastics (88 to 89%) and a refraction index of 1.53.
