Pneumatic cylinders come in hundreds of styles and configurations from dozens of manufacturers. But when an off-the-shelf model isn't quite right for an application, engineers are forced to alter their designs to accommodate standard cylinders. That's because most cylinder manufacturers are not set up to easily modify their products, according to officials at Nason, Wallhalla, S.C.

Nason has taken a different approach with its L-Series cylinder line, which is designed specifically for quick modifications to match customer requirements. Instead of using prefabricated parts, the company machines all of the cylinder's metal components. This permits customized cylinder ports, mounting configurations, and other features without affecting delivery.

The L-Series actuators are designed for demanding automation requirements. They are ruggedly constructed with thick-wall anodized aluminum housings and caps, and chrome-plated, highstrength stainless-steel rods.

The cylinders are factory lubricated with PTFE-impregnated grease and use Nitrile seals and self-lubricating bronze bearings. The results are low start-up and running friction, and long life. They also deliver more power in a smaller package than comparable pancake or compact-type cylinders, according to the company.

Nason offers three duty types, with the standard cylinder the most compact. A medium-duty version features extended internal rod bearings for additional load support and an integral seal and rod wiper. The heavy-duty cylinder incorporates these features and has a wear band on the piston for added support.

The L-Series cylinders have metric bores and rod sizes, and inch or metric mountings and porting. Eight standard bores range from 12 to 63 mm, and standard stroke lengths are from 5 to 50 mm. Maximum pressure is 14 bar and operating temperature range is –10 to 70°C. All cylinders are field rebuildable.
