No coy ploy — Innovative aluminum bottles capture top can honors

Aluminum contour bottles garner the nod from judges at the recent Can of the Year awards ceremony.

CCL Container, Hermitage, Pa., recently took three awards at the 2005 Can of the Year (COY) awards ceremony in Barcelona, Spain. The competition featured innovative designs by metal-container manufacturers from around the world.

CCL minted gold in the food category for two hip, dietary/nutritional products, Trimspa and Winfuel, marketed by Goen Technologies Corp., Cedar Knolls, N.J. Goen was the first supplement marketer to introduce aluminum bottles to its product line. According to CCL, Trimspa and Winfuel gleaned a competitive edge and shelf-appeal thanks to the use of the chunky, boldly decorated aluminum bottle. "The high-performance packaging not only delivers distinction at point of sale, but also reflects the edgy personalities of products they hold," says CCL spokesperson Ed Martin.

CCL also captured silver honors in both the resealable beverage container and aerosol category for Cadbury Beverage Americas' Snapple Elements redesign and Proctor & Gamble's Febreze Air Effects, respectively. The Snapple Element aluminum bottle was acknowledged for its extreme graphics and contoured easy grip silhouette. Febreze Air Effects, the first air sanitizer marketed in a bullet-shaped aluminum aerosol container. It is made from CCL Container's Trimline design and includes a proprietary high-performance internal lining. The ergonomic 59-mm container represents advances in the marriage of high-speed production and container size, reports CCL's Martin. "Previously, shaped aerosol containers had been produced at high speed, but in smaller diameters."
