Providing noncontact, automatic control of water faucets, soap dispensers, and other bathroom fixtures is Optek Technology's business. So, it's no surprise the Carrollton, Tex.-based company has developed a packaged optical proximity sensor capable of detecting the presence or absence of objects from 0.04 (1 mm) to over 24 in. (610 mm). The reflective sensor lets design engineers incorporate reliable optoelectronic sensing into commercial plumbing fixtures. The same basic device can be used for automatic faucet controls, soap dispensers, automatic toilets, and urinals.

Now, if they'd just do something about those doorknobs.
