Touchscreens based on Dispersive Signal Technology (DST) from 3M Touch Systems Inc., Methuen, Mass., target large displays used in education, financial exchanges, retail signage, and transportation. Conventional touchscreens sense touch through the interruption of electrical fields, acoustic waves, optical fields, or infrared light. DST screens instead sense bending in an overlay substrate. This scalable approach helps eliminate problems caused by onscreen contaminants and surface scratches, and it better rejects false signals.

A 40-in. MicroTouch DST touchscreen is the first in a planned series of large format (over 30-in.) models, says the company. Market data firm iSuppli estimates the market for commercial, large-screen LCD and plasma displays could reach $4.79 billion by 2009.
