The superplastic forming (SPF) of standard titanium alpha-beta alloys, such as 6Al-4V, requires press platen/die temperatures in the 900°C to 925°C range. The typical electric heating elements used for SPF press platens are of a special construction, which allows them to reliably operate at sheath temperatures in excess of 1000°C. However, besides the basic materials and construction of these heaters, there are a number of other factors that significantly contribute to the reliable operation.
