JEOL U.S.A., manufacturer of the University of Texas Center for Learning and Memory’s TEM (above), measured the intensity of the 1.2 to 2.5-Hz horizontal vibrations the equipment experienced in a fifth-floor lab. After isolation with a 0.4-Hz negative-stiffness system, vibration energy was reduced by nearly half, enabling clearer TEM pictures.
