Giving underwater robots a firm grip

If an underwater robot has a task to perform, such as opening a stuck valve or repairing a leaking pipe, it must anchor itself so it can apply force without the reaction pushing it away. A team of engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have devised a solution: Give the robot a way to “grab hold” of ferrous surfaces.

Technique molds large, hollow, monolithic composites

The process completely eliminates the seam typically found in large composite structures such as aircraft fuselages, seaplanes, and submarines.

Proprietary software lets company optimize flexible shafts

PerflexiIon proprietary software can optimize the performance attributes of any flexible rotary shaft, exceeding those required by current customer specifications. The software lets design engineers statistically capture and balance properties including torsion strength, bending flexibility, torsion deflection, and point of helix. Users can thus calculate the optimal shaft design without a compromise in device performance.
