Precision Plastic Components – Micromolding is More Than Small Parts

OEM design projects are increasingly requiring tighter tolerances, smaller or lighter components and high reliability/quality. These are challenges that must be addressed quickly by engineers in order to get the final products to market on time, even if the solution is custom in nature.

Shoulder-Fillet Stress Calculations Clarified

Key points
• Shoulder fillets are notches that generate transverse stresses under axial loading.
• Von Mises equivalent stresses let engineers determine the maximum principle stress when tension or bending combines with torsion.
• The location of the maximum stress in the fillet radius is determined in degrees.

Direct Digital Manufacturing: Impact and Opportunity

At the departmental level, justification for fixtures can be quite simple. Those that use direct digital manufacturing for this application report savings of 50 to 75 percent, when compared to traditional machining and fabricating processes. So, if the typical fixture costs $500, direct digital manufacturing has the potential to produce the same item for $125 to $250. Coupled with the rapid response to manufacturing challenges, this cost reduction makes it is easy to justify direct digital manufacturing of fixtures.

Webcast presenting the basics of the Direct Gear Design

Invention of the gear hobbing process about 150 years ago revolutionized not only gear fabrication, but also gear design. Times have changed. There is a clear trend to gear customization. This webcast presents the Direct Gear Design method – an alternative approach to traditional analysis and design of involute gears. It has successfully been implemented in many gear transmissions for aerospace, military, automotive, medical, agricultural, and other industries.

Engineering Handbook In Excel

The engineering handbook Roark's Formulas for Stress and Strain has been computerized to run in Excel. The software follows the book's organization of formulas, by chapter, table, and case. The software lets users open an application in Excel, load models, put in values, and solve. A Superposition wizard handles multiple load calculations on beams and plates. These features and others let users quickly decide whether it's necessary to run the numbers through FEA programs.

The attraction of Ferrofluid Bearings

Bearings in precision equipment such as computer disk-drive spindles, laser scanners/printers, and gyroscopes, need excellent stiffness and damping qualities to run true at high speeds. Until recently, designers of these applications relied on hydrodynamic oil and gas bearings, or ball bearings.
