Leslie Gordon

Printer-friendly version

Autodesk Simulation CFD is the company's latest simulation software. It builds on computational fluid dynamics capabilities gained through the recent acquisition of Blue Ridge Numerics. Autodesk Simulation CFD helps automate fluid flow and thermal simulation decision-making, thus eliminating cycles of costly physical prototyping. The CFD software works with Autodesk Inventor Fusion, letting engineers modify or simplify geometry when running simulations from CAD.

Software for CFD post-processing

Software for CFD post-processing

FieldView 13 for CFD post-processing lets users view animated transient filling sequences, and at the same time rotate, move, and zoom to gain new insights. The software lets users create compact representations of datasets, known as XDB files, that maintain the full numerical fidelity of their much larger complete datasets. XDB files are nearly 50 times smaller than the original data and therefore read faster and require far less disk space. FieldView 13 also delivers good graphics performance by exploiting modern multi-core CPU and many-core GPU systems. Image quality is excellent, with high quality anti-aliasing, transparency, and high-quality fonts.

The glass-fiber-reinforced polylactic acid (PLA) biopolymers have greater strength, stiffness, and thermal performance than unmodified PLA. The compounds are fully colorable and have 10% to 40% glass fiber.
The 30% glass-fiber-reinforced PLA grade has tensile strength of 16.5 ksi, nearly twice that of unmodified PLA. Flexural modulus is 1,630 ksi and heat deflection temperature (HDT) is 320°F at 66 psi, 200°F above that of the unmodified version.
Proprietary nucleation packages speed crystallization for quicker part ejection, so  injection-molding cycle time is similar to that of PP and ABS.

Printer-friendly version

The pull-on chuck automatically recognizes the core, latches on, and pulls it down the mandrel hands-free, letting a single operator safely raise, mount, and load parent core for cutting without contamination, scratches, or scuffs. The chuck handles paper, fiber, plastic, and other converting cores up to 120 in. long. It works with CT-10 Automatic and CT-10 Servo core cutters, as well remanufactured core-cutting machines.

Printer-friendly version

EP21LV two-part epoxy conforms to USP Class VI and Title 21, U.S. Code of Federal Regulations, FDA Chapter 1, Section 175.105 requirements. It works from -65 to 250°F and bonds to metals, glass, wood, rubbers, ceramics, and many plastics. It resists thermal cycling, water, oils, fuels, bases, acids, and salts. The epoxy's cured tensile strength is 7,600 psi; its shear strength is over 2,900 psi; and it elongates to 4.8% at 75°F. Its volume resistivity is 1015 ohm-cm, and its coefficient of thermal expansion is 53 in/in x 10-6/°C.
The epoxy mixes at 1:1 by weight or volume, but users can tailor cure rigidity by varying mix ratio. The adhesive has a 60 to 75-min working life and cures at room temperature in 24 to 36 hr or faster at elevated temperatures. It comes in amber-clear and other colors in pint, quart, gallon, and 5-gal kits.

Printer-friendly version

Engineered structural composites (ESC) combine fiberglass or carbon fiber with polyester, vinyl ester, polyurethane, and epoxy resins. They resist corrosion, extreme temperatures, moisture, and chemicals. They are less susceptible to relaxation or creep failure than competing materials and experience little or no shrinkage when molded with standard processes. ESC comes in Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) and Bulk Molding Compound (BMC) forms. Thicknesses down to 0.060 in. are available.
