Squids (superconducting quantum interference devices) line the cavity, beginning on the right, of a noiseless amplifier. The Squids are made of two layers of superconducting niobium surrounding a layer of aluminum oxide. The Squids can selectively amplify microwaves based on amplitude rather than phase.
