A planar tension test, like this one conducted at a Ford site in Germany, are meant to prevent out-of-plane stresses from impacting test data. FEA models show that up to 4% lateral strains are still present at 50% nominal axial strain in a 6-in.- wide sample of isobutyl rubber.
