When a bipyridine molecule bonded between two gold conductors is vertical, electrical resistance between the conductors is high. But when conductors are pushed ever so slightly closer to together, there’s not enough room for the bipyridine molecule to “stretch out,” so it tilts at angle and resistance falls.
