A typical use for serial-wireless systems is in material-handling and automated guided vehicles such as on PowerPallets from Ward Systems Inc., Grass Valley, Calif. Here intelligent motorized pallets drive on simple extruded track. Each carries a WD30 wireless DeviceNet serial transceiver from Omron Corp. Such systems make it possible for up to 3,200 I/O points to communicate through a master unit. Indoor communication range is about 60 m though up to three signal repeaters which can be inserted to boost the working area.
