The Barber-Nichols Steam Turbine set an unofficial speed record for steam vehicles by going over 145 mph as it was driven by Bob Barber at the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1985. The 4,500-lb car’s turbine used 1,100°F steam at 1,200 psi to generate 300 hp. A previous owner, Jim Crank, had assembled the car out of the remnants of the California Steam Bus Project. He also used the front suspension from a VW while the front end of a 1974 Cadillac Eldorado, complete with drive unit, served as the back end.
