March 8, 2007

Staff

The USS New York (LPD 21) will be the fifth San Antonio class amphibious transport dock ship when it takes to the seas sometime next year with a crew of 360 sailors.

Printer-friendly version
It will also carry 24 tons of steel reclaimed from the destroyed World Trade Center Towers. Fittingly enough, the steel was used in the bow section, so it will be leading the way as the ship named in honor of September 11 victims carries out its missions. The ship is being built by Northrop Grumman Ship Systems, Avondale Operations in New Orleans.
