A Temposonics C-Series linear-position sensor from MTS Systems Corp., Cary, N.C.(mtssensors.com), fits completely inside a cylinder 1.4-in. long with a 0.91-in. diameter, making it the smallest sensor to use magnetorestrictive technology. Engineers at MTS were able to get the sensor that small by using ASICs. The device is powered by 5 V, but can be adapted to run on 12 or 24-V power. It can also be configured with an IP67 housing.
