The RE 8 motor has an 8-mm diameter, 16-mm length, and weighs less than 4 gm. The 0.8-mm-diameter motor shaft, (size of pencil lead) turns in two sleeve bearings. The ceramic shaft’s electrical insulating properties allow for a very compact commutator design. Precious metal brushes ensure constant and low contact resistance between brushes and commutator.

Advantages of the lightweight rotor include low inertia, very-fast acceleration, no magnetic detent, and minimal electromagnetic interference. The motor’s ironless winding allows for greater efficiency and makes it suitable for network-independent applications, such as lasers, leveling equipment, or insulin pumps.
