With a decentralized I/O and control platform, PSSuniversal from Pilz, Canton., Mich. (pilz.com), is said to be an economical way to install safety and control functions such as enable principle and block switching, without feedback.

The platform consists of various electronic modules, letting users tailor the system to specific automation requirements and only pay for what they need. The design also makes it easy to expand.

This means a machine can have decentralized inputs and outputs with pure standard control functions, pure safety functions with the Pilz SafetyBUS p safe-bus system, as well as intelligent dovetailing of both worlds. The platform communicates via all common standard fieldbuses and meets Cat. 4 of EN 954-1 and SIL 3 of IEC 61508, as well as other international standards.
