To combat the problem roads caused by this weather, some state transportation departments are trying the SafeLane surface overlay system that is designed to keep ice away. It is made up of a patented combination of epoxy and aggregate rock. Transportation workers charge the surface with this liquid anti-icing chemical when the forecast calls for snow. The SafeLane overlay acts as a sponge, storing the chemicals inside then releasing them as conditions worsen. According to the manufacturer, the SafeLane overlay also reduces chemical wear on bridge structures by blocking chloride and water intrusion.
