Industrial- Ethernet growth to outpace networking protocols

January 24, 2008

Growth in Ethernet-based communication should exceed that of networking protocols, and global shipments of industrial Ethernet nodes will increase 22% over the next five years, according to a report from IMS Research.

“Industrial Ethernet appears to be following the same path as fieldbus protocols,” says John Morse, a senior market analyst. Profinet will dominate the EMEA (Europe, Mideast, and Africa), while Ethernet/IP will enjoy the lion’s share in the Americas. This is due to the relative strength of Siemens and Rockwell Automation in EMEA and the Americas, respectively. The mix of technologies should be more even in Asia, the report claims.
