Colorful toys leave greener footprint

November 8, 2007

OnColor BIO Colorants from PolyOne Corp., Cleveland, give the Indoor Gardening Kit a greener footprint.

Printer-friendly version

Green Toys Inc., San Francisco, worked closely with bioplastic producer Cereplast Inc., Hawthorne, Calif., and PolyOne to ensure dyes would give bioplastic toys vibrant hues and break down when composted. Synthetic dyes in biodegradable plastics don’t break down. OnColor BIO Colorants can be used with biodegradable polymers such as polylactide (PLA), polyhydroxybutyrate-valerate copolymer (PHBV), polybutylene succinate (PBS), polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate (PBAT), and starch blends. The dyes also meet several industry and composting standards, including EN 13432 (European Union), ASTM D6400 (U.S.A.), BPS GREENPLA (Japan), and DIN CERTCO (Germany).

Green Toys’ initial product line made from renewable resources includes a cooking and dinner set, a tea service, and pails and shovels for building sand castles.
