Chinese-Built 60 mpg Wildfire Puts a New Face on Motorcycles
Appears in Print As: A motorcycle in disguise gets 60 mpg
The Chinese-built Wildfire is actually a three-wheeled motorcycle with some added coachwork. Perhaps its most noteworthy feature is its 60-mpg rating. There are two versions, a sedan for $7,781 and a delivery truck for $7,160. Each is powered by a 26-hp, 650-cc, water-cooled four-stroke twin engine. A four-speed manual transmission includes reverse. Front and rear drum brakes provide stopping power. Cruising speed is 45 mph, and top speed is 65 mph. The delivery version, which has collapsible bed sides, can carry a 1,000-lb load. The vehicles are street legal in every state except California, a state in which the company has yet to get the vehicles approved and certified.![]()

purchasing power
If you don't like it, don't buy it. There's no such thing as a
universally loved vehicle. As a niche car/bike it looks kind of
cool. A purpose-built machines go I applaud diversity in the
US & global market.
I'd guess that it's slightly "safer" than a typical bike
but nobody (in this comment thread) is whining about
motorcycle safety.
For those of you who equate mass with safety should put
their money where their mouth is and buy a bus. Otherwise
find another reason to dislike small/cheap/efficient vehicles.
And in terms of Buying American - while a laudable goal -
until We Americans quit shopping at places like Wal-Mart for
the lowest price we will continue to support other nations.

Well, there used to be a car
Well, there used to be a car called Robin Reliant, that wasn't far off this in the UK - a 3 wheeler, went lick shxx off a shovel. I agree with some above that 60mpg is hardly anything to write home about.
My 13 year old diesel Peugot gets the same and is has quite a few on the clock.
Desperation Designs of another era
Living in Europe after WWII all these poorly designed and dangerous cars remind me of the "desperation" junk designs that briefly popped up in Europe and then died a quick death as people quickly found out that they were a pain to own, slow in traffic, prone to wearing out quickly and had the resale value of a wet paper bag with one side missing.
I like fuel efficient cars but I remember most of these vehicles as having very short life spans and frankly being very poorly designed and unsafe. Many naive eco-poopheads will of course, be attacted to this junk, because they don't know any better, or just don't have the brains to realize that this is just a coffin on wheels. Drum brakes? you must be joking, There's better stuff out there for a little more. Buy a used Toyota Corolla instead.
3 wheeled Wildfire
$7000 for this little piece of pooh. Ford could put in their showroom for $3000 and make a big margine. And if Ford did make this, it would be run outta the industry. You think the Pinto was unsafe, wait and see onw of thse fold up like a dollar suitcase in a wreck.
three wheel vehicals////vs Army tank style SUV's
Motor cycles have been in existence for as long if not longer than four wheel autos, Three wheel configurations have followed the two wheel motocycle, either with two wheels in the back or Reversed with sandard two wheels in front.
If a regular motor cycle was hit by some of these tank like full size "SUV"s of course the "SUV would win, and if "SAFETY was the prime concern of driving then we would all be driving an abrams tank, or a large SUV.
I would suppose that you would feel safer on an "AIRCRAFT CARRIER" rather than a small hydroplane boat, but they are two different animals,,,,,GM atempted to "SINK" many of the new concept cars that were built on three wheels, stating that they do not deserve any government loans as they were not considered to be "Cars" that real people would buy.
The three wheel car (motorcycle) Like an SUV is only as safe as the driver,,,,If a driver of an SUV will drive it like he would drive a sports car, it too would Flip over....If you cannot afford to buy fuel @$10.00 per gallon, you can have all the safety in the world, but it is not going anywhere. and NO a three wheel vehical(motorcycle) should not have to pass Crash tests, it is a people transporter, and if the operator drives in a sensible fashion, he will economically get from point A to point B.
Take a "T-REX" for a drive-you will certainly walk away with a different point of view.
If it works....why fix it?
the three wheel high milege vehicals are the way of the future
thank you

Wildfire
This type of vehicles were avilable in Europe back in the 40's and probably even now. Nothing new here. A question has to be asked, what would a real Free Market give us? To note your current vehicle would give much better milage if Government regs did not limit compression ratio's to control emmisions.
wildfire- 3 wheel instability.
we learned in WW2 that front single, rear 2 wl vehiles are inherently instable during turning. they now even design recumbent tricycles with 2 turning wheels up front.
what happened to the 3 wheeler ATV's? DUH
Focus Diesel?
Not too keen on 3-wheel cars (safety concerns), but would love to replace my 2003 Ford Focus with a diesel version. Are they available in the USA?
WildFire and USA Regulation
I like all of these types of vehicles. All over the world, there are 3 wheeled vehicles that are doing the work of big, heavy, "safe", US regulated cars/trucks. Once upon time, if you look in very old Popular Mechanics magazines, plans to built low-cost vehicles from recyled auto parts and suppiles from your hardware store were published all of time. I think we need to be safe, but here in the USA, we are hindered by regulation that would prevent most of us from using a WildFire on public roads, much less even thinking of making something like this. The other saddening fact is that the ingenuity of building anything has gone by the wayside, we now just look to 3rd world countries for innovations such as the WildFire.
What class?
In what class of vehicle is this street legal? As a motor-cycle? Certainly not as a car that must pass crash-worthiness and other requirements. Do some homework here.
