Modular gas manifolds simplify changes

Oct. 23, 2003
Manifolds for handling corrosive or high-purity gases are often custom-built devices. This makes it difficult to upgrade or change them.

The 52 Series of modular manifolds from Concoa, Virginia Beach, Va. (www.concoa.com), lets users choose from a variety of off-the-shelf components to expand as gas requirements grow. Components can be assembled in the field in left or right-hand orientations to suit user needs. The manifolds are based on 1/4-in. pipe sizes that minimize wetted areas and the risk of contamination. Cylinder stations use springless-diaphragm valves for low-torque operation and leak-tight positive closure. Valve stations have two inlet connections, so they can be used for left or right extensions, or double-row manifolds.

Manifolds come in brass, chrome-plated brass, and 316L stainless steel. Standard 12-in. extensions let users secure cylinders against a wall yet leave space for changing cylinders. There are also compact manifolds with 6-in. spacing, so staggering cylinders lets twice as many fit in the same space. The 1/4-in.-pipe size accommodates standard CGA connections between manifold extensions, making the manifolds easier to install with better sealing integrity. Pigtails are stainless steel for zero permeation, even when using helium or hydrogen. Pigtails are fully encased in armor to prevent kinks and extend the hoses' service life. All CGS connections have a built-in check valve to prevent contamination when changing cylinders.
