Heavy-duty brakes fortify wind turbines

Emergency braking requirements of today's wind turbines under maximum conditions can be compared to those of a 40-ton mining truck driving down a 25% grade at 87 miles per hour with a cliff ¼ mile ahead. To meet these demands, ERS Series electrically released, spring-engaged brakes serve as pitch brakes for wind turbines that require both static holding power and the ability to withstand high inertia emergency stops. The11.3-lb ERS68 has been tested to more than 20,000 fully loaded dynamic stops, offering 100 ft-lb of static torque with a maximum of 2,000 rpm and a brake release time of 0.2 sec.

Step motors pack power into compact package

The 4418 series of NEMA 17 stepper motors provides up to 35% more torque compared to motors of similar dimensions. Motors are available in three different stack lengths, starting with the nimble 4418S at 1.17-in. thickness and the powerful 4418M measuring 1.58 in. Depending on stack length, motors can produce up to 68 oz-in. holding torque. Performance may be customized at no extra cost; various bipolar and unipolar windings are available. Mechanical customizations such as shafts and wiring harnesses may also be added. Motors are suitable in applications where size is a factor and load capacities are critical to precision operation, such as in medical, printing, imaging, optical, and robotics.

High-torque tooth clutch withstands washdown

5H Series tooth clutches deliver fast, no-slip engagement for washdown applications where high torque is required. Clutches offer a positive, single-position tooth interface for synchronized engagement and feature a torque range of 500 to 12,000 in.-lb, with instant torque at engagement up to 7,100 in.-lb. The nickel-plated exterior and rotary seal meet NEMA 1.26.5 protection standards. Clutches are compatible with timing belt sprockets, chain sprockets, belt pulleys, or couplings for use in a range of applications; they can be flange or pilot mounted and are controlled with a 3-way, solenoid, pneumatic valve. Optional solid-lube and/or stainless steel bearings are available.
