Glass-Reinforced Polymers OK For Hot Water

April 24, 2008
NSF International has certified two glass-reinforced polphthalamide (PPA) resins for use in potable hot water.

The Zytel HTN PPAs from DuPont Engineering Polymers are certified under NSF/ANSI Standard 61, Drinking Water System Components — Health Effects for hot water contact for fittings, pipe, and other parts including valves and manifolds. The certification gives manufacturers of water heaters and other equipment two material options.

“Zytel HTN materials deliver a balance of toughness, strength, and stiffness. And there’s little change in its properties after long-term exposure to hot water,” says DuPont Engineering Polymer market development manager for water management applications Kim Richmann. The PPA’s mold-fill properties let designers integrate the functions of several metal parts into a single molded part. “This can result in significant cost savings with no sacrifice in part performance or quality,” said Richmann.

The 35% glass-reinforced Zytel HTN51G35HSLR BK420 is a lubricated high performance polyamide resin that is heat stabilized and sports improved hydrolysis resistance. The 45% glass-reinforced HTN51G45HSLR BK420 version is a heat-stabilized, hydrolysis-resistant, polyamide resin. To receive this form of certification, material samples are tested at 182°F (82°C).
