Lee Spring celebrates 90th anniversary

Lee Spring, Brooklyn, N.Y., is celebrating its 90th anniversary through its “Better Springs Build a Better World” contest. Customers may submit products that have positively impacted our world. Products submitted must contain at least one Lee Spring stock or custom part. The contest, which runs through June 30, will award five prizes. The grand prize is a weekend for two in New York City plus $900 in spending money; a second prize is $900; and three third prizes of $90 will be awarded.

Lenze-AC Tech appoints director of engineering

Lenze-AC Tech, Uxbridge, Mass., appointed Jim Craig as director of engineering. Craig will direct all new product design, development, and sustaining engineering activities at the Uxbridge facility.

Craig, former product manager of High Power Motor Drives at Danfoss in Rockford, Ill. comes to Lenze-AC Tech with more than 28 years of industrial automation experience. He completed his Bachelors of Science in electrical engineering from Southern Illinois University, did graduate work at Stanford University, and has received multiple patents.

PTDA welcomes new members

The Power Transmission Distributors Association (PTDA), Chicago, recently welcomed six new members.

Three companies joined the association as distributor members:

  • Crimson Electric Inc., Greer, S.C., distributor of mechanical power transmission (PT) products, motors, and electrical/electronic drives

  • Solutions Industrielles, Chicoutimi, Quebec, a distributor of mechanical PT products, bearings, and PT accessories, and

  • Van Meter Industrial, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, distributor of mechanical PT products, motors, and PT accessories.

The association welcomed two new manufacturer members:

  • Drop Designs, Prince George, B.C., manufacturer of bearings, belt and chain drives, conveyors and material handling components, shaft couplings and u-joints, and PT accessories, and

  • Leeson Canada, Mississauga, Ontario, manufacturer of adjustable/variable speed drives, clutches and brakes, motor/motion control, conveyors and material handling components, shaft couplings and u-joints, gearing, motors, and PT accessories

One company joined PTDA as an associate member:

  • Billtrust, Jamesburg, N.J., a biller and collector of paper and electronic payments.

SME hosts annual member event

The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) and its Southeast Michigan chapters will host “A Passion for Manufacturing: 2008 SME Annual Meeting & Interactive ‘Unconference,’” May 31-June 3, at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center. SME is proud to hold its flagship member event in Detroit, where the Society was founded more than 75 years ago, and show its continued support for manufacturing in the Great Lakes region.

The event will convene industry leaders, innovators, and educators from throughout the U.S. and Canada to share ideas and best practices, and discuss advancements in manufacturing technologies and business practices. It is open to SME members and nonmembers and combines an Interactive “Unconference” with networking, leadership, and industry recognition activities.

PTO welcomes new board director

The PTO (Profibus and Profinet North America), Scottsdale, Ariz., has appointed Victor Wolowec to its board of directors. Wolowec is vice president, Solutions Business at Endress+Hauser, a provider of measuring instrumentation and process automation solutions. He will replace former board member Todd Hubbell, who was recently promoted to vice president of logistics at Endress+Hauser. Wolowec earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Penn State University and an MBA from Indiana Wesleyan University.

The PTO is a non-profit corporation working to enhance Profibus and Profinet standards while educating and assisting users and device manufacturers throughout North America on their advantages.

Omron opens Mexico facility

Omron, Schaumburg, Ill., opened Omron Electronics de Mexico, S.A., a new regional headquarters in Apodaca, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, on January 23. Under the direction of Ricardo Lomeli, general manager, the company will provide sales and technical support for the growing number of Omron industrial automation customers across Mexico.

A key function for the new facility will be as a customer training center for Omron's programmable controllers (PLCs), motion controllers, ac drives, machine vision systems, and sensors. The 3,000 sq ft office includes a fully equipped vision testing lab, and is staffed with sales engineers, field application engineers, and a technical services manager. to support Omron's industrial automation distributors and their customers. This new office complements Omron's existing sales and service teams based in Mexico City, D.F. and offers room for expansion to support planned additional staffing and warehouse needs.
