Impact-modified acrylic copolymers are said to be an alternative to polycarbonate, methyl methacrylate acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, and impact-modified acrylics.
Eight grades are available, including injectionmoldable Zylar 631, UV-resistant, and antistatic formulations. The 631 version is said to be the clearest and toughest of the eight grades. Its low density lets more parts per pound be molded per pound, compared to other clear resins. Energy needed to process the acrylic is reportedly 40% less than competitive polycarbonates because processing equipment can run 20 to 100°F cooler. Applications for the acrylic copolymer include medical devices, floor-care appliances, and cosmetics packaging.
