More ideas for fluid power education
What is the future of fluid power? I was honored to be able to sit on a panel at the recent NFPA Education/Industry Summit in Chicago. The topic was an important one: Should there be a fluid power degree? Along with myself, panel members included Joe Kovach, vice president of technology and innovation at Parker Hannifin; and University of Minnesota professor Kim Stelson, who is also director of the Engineering Research Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power. The panel was moderated by Bill Parks, president of Deltrol Fluid Products and the chairman of NFPA's Education Committee.

Are all mineral-based hydraulic oils the same?
In this month's MRO feature, Rob Profilet from Lubrizol Corp. answers pertinent questions about the differences in hydraulic oils and how choosing the right one results in peak operation. Profilet is commercial manager of hydraulics and gear oils and works at Lubrizol's headquarters in Wickliffe, Ohio. Q: Why is it difficult to choose the right fluid? A: Approximately 200 million gal of hydraulic oils are used in the U.S. annually. About 165 million gal of that volume are mineral based. The end user has to sort through a multitude of suppliers, brands, and performance levels to determine which fluid is best for his operation.

Hydraulics moves mountains. . . one scoop at a time
To the casual observer, excavators, loaders, and other construction equipment appear to operate about the same as they did three or even four decades ago. A closer look may reveal subtle changes that have occurred to equipment design over the years. However, these external clues betray the dramatic improvements that today's equipment holds over its ancestors of yesteryear. This is evident in Komatsu's new PC400LC-8 excavator.

Rotary encoders are good for your system
Rotational motion abounds in machines employing fluid power. Typically, rotational motion axes are used for powering material transport (e.g., conveyors) between processing stations. Often, rotational axes in machines with hydraulic cylinders are driven by hydraulic motors. Even when they're driven by electric motors, you should understand the issues associated with rotational axis control. For example, often you must synchronize, or gear, the motion of a conveyor with that of a processing station that has linear actuators (e.g., varying the speed of the log feed chain to match the speed of log cutting in the shape saw example).

Discovering Direct Digital Manufacturing: Impact and Opportunity
Sponsored by RedEye RPM
DATE: December 12, 2007
TIME: 2:00pm ET

Designers face difficult design challenges every day and each issue has different technological options for a solution, but no one technology works every where, every time. RedEye RPM, a business unit of Stratasys, Inc. has invited Todd Grimm, a well known rapid prototyping consultant, to discuss different technologies, leading to a closer look at where DDM (Direct Digital Manufacturing) technology works and why. The presentation will cut through the confusion to provide designers and manufacturing engineers the data they need to move in the right direction for their projects.

Introduction to Direct Gear Design
Sponsored by AKGears
DATE: January 16th, 2008
TIME: 2:00pm ET

Invention of the gear hobbing process about 150 years ago revolutionized not only gear fabrication, but also gear design. The cutting edge of the hob presents the generating gear rack. The standard universal gear design approach provides gear interchangeability and reduces tooling inventory, however, it also constrains performance for particular gear applications.

This webcast presents the Direct Gear Design method – an alternative approach to traditional analysis and design of involute gears, which separates gear geometry definition from the generating rack and tool selection to maximize gear transmission performance for a particular product and application.

Italian fluid power exhibition reflects strong industry growth
A robust 2007 sets the backdrop for the 2008 edition of Fluidtrans Compomac - Biennial International Exhibition of Fluid Power, Power and Motion Transmission, Drive, Control Equipment and Industrial Design- May 27 to 30, at fieramilano, Rho., Milan, Italy. The show, in its 41st year, will reflect the strength in the industry, with year-to-end estimates showing widespread growth. A quarterly business survey based on a sample of fluid power companies and conducted by the Italian Association of Hydraulics and Pneumatics Manufacturers (Assofluid) confirms the overall positive trend. According to the survey, midterm results for 2007, compared with results over the same period in 2006, show a strong increase in sales across the board. Vigorous performance in all branches of activity indicates that the market is on the upturn and very likely to proceed into the second half of the year to end.
